Dr. Kevin Wright was acknowledged as the Exotic DVM of the Year and received the award on October 15, 2008, at the annual conference of the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians in Los Angeles, California. The honor is bestowed annually to an outstanding exotic animal practitioner selected from nominations made by the readers of Exotic DVM Veterinary Magazine.

The Exotic DVM of the Year award is an international honor presented to an individual who:

  • Is extraordinarily competent with all species of exotic pets
  • Is dedicated to advancing the exotic animal medicine profession through quality work by themselves and others
  • Is deeply involved in the education of veterinary students and clinicians
  • Serves as an ambassador of good will for the exotic animal profession
  • Is committed to the future potential of this field
  • Embodies the essence of stewardship of exotic pet species.

The Exotic DVM of the Year award was given to Dr. Wright by Dr. Wilbur Amand (pictured on the right) who was the first recipient of this award.  Dr. Amand was also Dr. Wright's advisor during his residency at the Philadelphia Zoo.  Dr. Wright is only the second private practive veterinarian to receive this honor since its inception in 1999.

*****

Hi, I am Dr. Kevin Wright, the co-founder of Arizona Exotic Animal Hospital, the Valley's first hospital devoted exclusively to the care of exotic pets.

I have always wanted to work with exotic animals for as long as I can remember and decided upon being a veterinarian around 6th or 7th grade.  I attended the University of Florida and received a Bachelor’s degree in zoology with high honors in 1984. During my senior year as an undergraduate, I worked as a veterinary technician for Dr. Elliot Jacobson and Dr. George Kollias in the exotic animal and wildlife ward of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.

I started at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in fall of 1984. During breaks I worked in the lab of Dr. Jack Gaskin, a virologist who studied diseases of exotic animals such as Pacheco’s virus of psittacine birds, psittacine beak and feather disease, encephalomyocarditis virus of zoo animals, and snake paramyxovirus. Between my junior and senior year of veterinary school, I was a preceptor at the National Zoo and Miami Metrozoo and had a great time working with everything from pandas to kiwis to Komodo dragons. I graduated with my doctorate of veterinary medicine in 1988 and my senior thesis on the care of a neonatal white tiger won the Hill’s Nutrition Award competition.

My first job as a veterinarian was in an AAHA-certified small animal and exotic animal practice in Miami, Florida, where I learned a lot of psittacine medicine from Dr. Don Harris, a prominent avian veterinarian. In addition to a caseload that included pet parrots, psittacine breeding facilities, and small zoos, I worked as the veterinarian for local wildlife rehabilitation facilities thereby gaining extensive experience with raptors and other injured wild birds as well as native mammals and reptiles.  One of my interesting cases at this time was a bald eagle that became mysteriously paralyzed.  I removed an ingrown feather follicle that turned out to have a Clostridium bacteria growing within it and in about 24 hrs the eagle was completely back to normal.

In 1990, I left private practice for a residency in zoological medicine that was a joint program of the Philadelphia Zoo and the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine.  My mentors were Dr. Wilbur Amand and Keith Hinshaw.  My residency included work on a variety of zoo animals, exotic pets, and domestic barnyard animals. One of my favorite avian patients at the zoo was Demetrius, a kea with endless curiosity and a taste for the tip of a curator’s thumb! During my residency, I published two papers in the Bulletin of the Association of Avian Veterinarians and one in the Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine along with several articles in Reptile and Amphibian Magazine and The Vivarium.

A tuatara, one of the many unique creatures I encountered in the zoo world.

My wife and I hand-raised this eland that had been rejected by her mother

After completing my residency in 1992, I served as the the veterinarian and curator for the amphibian and reptile collection at the Philadelphia Zoo. During that time, I was appointed an adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania in the Department of Clinical Sciences and taught courses in zoological medicine to veterinary students. I also worked as a contract veterinarian for the the New Jersey State Aquarium in Camden. In 1999, I went to work for The Phoenix Zoo in various capacities.  I participated in many exciting conservation projects such as translocating the Sonoran pronghorn, head-starting Chiricahua leopard frogs, surveying Antiguan racers, and building breeding enclosures for the blue iguana on Grand Cayman.  At the same time I was having these tremendous experiences in the wild, I also was spending more and more time in meetings and shuffling papers and getting farther away from what I really loved to do.  I really missed the day to day contact with animals and eventually returned to private practice in 2005.  In December 2007, Dr. Jay Johnson and I opened Arizona Exotic Animal Hospital.

I co-authored the book Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry with my classmate, Dr. Brent Whitaker. Published in 2001, this book received worldwide acclaim for filling a major gap in the field of exotic animal medicine. I've also contributed chapters to Reptile Medicine and Surgery (1st and 2nd Editions), The British Small Animal Veterinary Association’s Manual of Reptiles, The Exotic Animal Formulary, The American Veterinary Medical Association’s Emergency Response Guide, and the first Spanish language text on exotic animal medicine, Atlas de Medicina, Terapeutica y Patologia de Animales Exoticos (which was also translated into Portuguese and will soon be available in an English-language edition). I am currently at work on a second book on amphibian medicine and will likely always have a book or chapter or paper in progess!

I really enjoy writing and have published over 150 articles on exotic pet and zoological medicine and the care of amphibians, reptiles, invertebrates, birds, and mammals in captivity.   I write for both professional and lay audiences. (You may see a partial list of these in my bibliography below.)

Speaking on tortoise herpesvirus at the 2008 North American Veterinary Conference

I have been a featured speaker many times at the largest international veterinary meeting, the North American Veterinary Conference. Additionally, I've presented talks for the Western States Veterinary Conference, the Wild West Veterinary Conference, the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians, the International Conference on Exotic Animal Medicine, American Association of Zoo Veterinarians, Cornell University’s Special Species Symposium, University of Pennsylvania’s Special Species Symposium, University of California’s College of Veterinary Medicine, Colorado Statue University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine, Hahnemann’s University’s Master’s Program in Laboratory Animal Medicine, American Association of Laboratory Animal Scientists, National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association, the American Association of Zoos and Aquariums, The International Herpetological Symposium, The Colloquium on Amphibian and Reptile Pathology, and the Guadalajara Zoo, among many others.  I

I was one of the original board members for the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians and served as its President from 1996-1997. I am also a member of the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians, the Association of Avian Veterinarians, the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians, and the American Association of Zoos and Aquariums. I serve on the Research Committee of the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians and on the Conservation and Research Committee of the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians.

In the field with an endangered Sonoran pronghorn

Over the course of my career, I've worked with a variety of conservation projects including reintroduction of the black-footed ferret, the relocation of Sonoran pronghorn from Mexico to the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge, head-starting Chiricahuan leopard frogs and releasing them back into southeastern Arizona, field surveys for the Antiguan racer and Central American river turtle, and helping to construct a captive-breeding facility for the Grand Cayman blue rock iguana. I created the League of Ferret Folks for the Phoenix Zoo, whereby volunteers maintain the breeding colony of black-footed ferrets, as well as the Terrific Tortoise Team composed of volunteers who care for the zoo's Aldabra and Galapagos tortoises.

I am currently a conservation associate with the National Aquarium in Baltimore and a scientific advisor to the National Mississippi River Museum’s conservation program.  I also remain active with the Antiguan Racer Conservation Project, the Wyoming Toad Species Survival Plan, and am a veterinary advisor for the New Zealand Archey's Frog, one of the most endangered amphibians in the world.

I may be familiar to you from my stint as a newspaper columnist known as "The Pet Doctor". I wrote over 160 weekly columns for The Arizona Republic, the state’s largest circulation daily newspaper, from December 2001 through February 2005. I've also appeared on numerous local, national, and international radio and television programs including "CBS This Morning", "The O’Reilly Factor", "America After Hours", and "Horizons".

My first redfoot tortoise, Spotty

My 2nd ferret, Rascal

I'm the youngest of five children and grew up with parents who at first tolerated and then came to enjoy the wide variety of unusual pets I brought home. My first ferret, Flower, was the pet that won over my parents’ hearts.  I still have a redfoot tortoise named Apollo that was acquired the day that Apollo 17 launched, as well as many of his offspring and grandchildren. In addition to many tortoises, my wife and I share our home with a rabbit, three parrots, owl finches, snakes, lizards, toads, tarantulas, darkling beetles, and a sheltie.
